It was two in the morning, and I was tired as hell, but I stood in the doorway of my bedroom, staring at the stupid mattress.

The damn thing was mocking me. I fucking hated that mattress. I’d been serious about burning it. Dead fucking serious. That piece of shit needed to go.

Seeing Amelia tonight had helped a little. When she came back from the movies with Brynn I’d tackled her onto the couch. I’d let her up once when she needed to go to the bathroom, but otherwise, I embraced my inner clinger. Because fuck it, she felt good and I loved being the guy who got to hold her.

Unfortunately, she had to be at work early in the morning, so she’d gone home. As much as I’d wanted to go with her—cling to her like the barnacle I apparently was—I didn’t. I was suddenly worried about coming on too strong—about pushing her too hard. I bounced back and forth between wanting to smother her and assuming she loved it, and wanting to make sure I gave her space to figure things out for herself.

Chase did have a point about scaring her with the mattress thing. What was I going to say? Hey girl, in this family when we’re ready to put our past behind us and move into a new phase of life, we have a big ass bonfire and burn our mattress. And guess what, we’re burning mine tonight because after a couple of months I’m ready to flip the switch and be a committed, monogamous guy with you. Cool?

She probably wasn’t ready for that. I hadn’t given her enough time.

The irony of all this wasn’t lost on me. Wasn’t I supposed to be the one balking at commitment? I’d never been in a long-term relationship. Shouldn’t I be freaking out about the enormity of my feelings for her? Clinging to my old life with everything I had? Shouldn’t I be kicking and screaming as life tried to drag me away from my vow of perpetual singlehood?

And Amelia? She was made for this. Commitment was totally her thing.

Yet, here we were. I’d been like the Peter Pan of bachelorhood—resisted growing up for all it was worth. Because growing up was boring. It was what everyone else did. Why should I be like everyone else? Why not do what I want, and live my life, and be happy and to hell with what anyone thought of it?

Except that Amelia made me happy in a way nothing else ever had. Or ever would. I wasn’t blind. I knew a good thing when it fell into my lap in a bar. Just because I’d never had it before didn’t mean I couldn’t recognize it for what it was. Amelia was everything. She was a fucking unicorn, and who in their right mind would let a unicorn go if he managed to catch one?

Not this guy.

I leaned against the doorframe and crossed my arms. This bed was not going to defeat me.

“Okay, here’s the deal,” I said.
